Researchers at the University of Florida are advancing new technologies to detect nuclear activity from space, positioning the university at the forefront of a rapidly evolving area of national security and space research.

Two recent projects — one funded by the National Science Foundation, the other by the U.S. Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration — are making strides toward improving the predictability of the plasma inside tokamaks using cutting-edge AI through UF’s supercomputer, HiPerGator. 

The Consortium for Nuclear Forensics, a University of Florida-led team of 32 scientists and engineers at 16 universities, received a five-year, $26.4 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Agency, or NNSA, to develop new nuclear forensic technologies and to train the next generation of nuclear sleuths to use them.

A research team led by the University of Florida is using artificial intelligence and high-performance computing to explore swarms of airborne particles to solve combustible mysteries, a study that may lead to more efficient engines and better combustion in power plants.

With a focus on global security and scientific collaboration, the University of Florida hosted hundreds of students, professors and national laboratory scientists and engineers last week for the 2025 National Nuclear Security Administration R&D University Program Review. 

The University of Florida has appointed Marie Kane as assistant vice president for National Security Research, a newly created leadership role designed to advance UF’s strategic research initiatives in defense, intelligence and national security.
